Brooklyn Reads: A Woman Is a School with Céline Semaan

Thursday, September 26, 2024

7–9 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

Celebrate the launch of Céline Semaan’s memoir A Woman Is a School with the author. Semaan is the founder of Slow Factory, an organization dedicated to addressing intersecting crises of climate justice and social inequity through education, narrative change, and regenerative design. In this book, she weaves personal and familial tales of resistance in Lebanon between 1948 and 2023. As a child refugee and survivor of war, Semaan channels her ancestral lineage of hakawati—storytellers of the Levant, who hold indigenous knowledge.

The program begins with a performance by a zaffe band, between the author and Sasha Bonét, writer, nonfiction editor at Apogee Journal, and cultural critic. Stay afterward for a book signing.

Tickets are $50 and include a copy of A Woman Is a School. Member tickets are $43. Not a Member? Join today!

This program will include ASL interpretation. For access needs, email us at access@brooklynmuseum.org.
